The Estonian natural world is unique and diverse. Bogs and marshes are the true treasures of Estonia. Bogs are magical and ancient places that were formed around 8,000 years ago. As much as 5.5% of the Estonian mainland is covered with bogs and marshes and 22% with peatlands.
This wonderful place is home to countless animals and plant species. The most common prostrate shrub species are heather, lingonberry, European blueberry, cloudberry, labrador tea, etc. The most common trees are Scots pine and downy birch, while the European spruce is less common. In the bog you may also encounter its indigenous inhabitants which are mainly invertebrates; however, some elk, mountain hare and roe deer have also settled there.
Up to 95% of the total mass of peat is water. There are lots of different water bodies in the bog – bog ponds, hollows, streams and bog lakes. The bog ponds can be up to 4-5 metres deep but usually they are less than two metres deep. Bigger bog ponds may have round or oval islands in the middle. Bog islands may be floating. In summer, it is a very refreshing experience to go swimming in the bog pond.
Going on a bog hike is an excellent way to liven up your daily life and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Being surrounded by fresh clean air stimulates our senses and helps us relax. Wooden pathways have made bogs easily accessible for people.
