Mukri bog (Rapla County)

Mukri bog is located in Rapla County and is one of the oldest peat bogs in Estonia, having developed over more than 10,000 years. The bog is accessible via a 2.5-kilometre wooden boardwalk that leads through wetlands, across bog pools, and along the forested edges of the mire. As you walk, you’ll see wide open bog landscapes where stunted pines and dark pools stretch toward the horizon. The bog is home to several insect-eating plants, such as sundew, and in autumn it is rich with cranberries. Along the trail lies a small bog-edge lake where visitors can swim during warmer months. Wildlife is often seen here, and the variety of bird species adds to the unique experience of each visit. Mukri bog is an ideal place to enjoy nature and silence in any season.

Three interesting facts about Mukri bog:

  • The peat layer in Mukri bog is more than 7 metres thick in some places, indicating very ancient peat formation.
  • Mukri Lake, located in the middle of the bog, is up to 2.5 metres deep and suitable for swimming in summer.
  • Mukri bog is one of the few bogs in Estonia where the boardwalk forms a loop, allowing visitors to complete a full circular hike.
