Tolkuse bog (Pärnu County)
Tolkuse bog is located in Pärnu County, within the Luitemaa Nature Reserve, and is one of the most beautiful and diverse bogs in Western Estonia. What makes it unique are the high coastal dunes, rising up to 36 metres, offering stunning views over the bog dotted with dark pools. The hiking trail leads across a landscape of pines and mossy bog surfaces and takes visitors to the top of the Tõotusemägi viewing tower. From there, breathtaking views open toward both the bog and the sea.
Tolkuse bog is rich in birdlife — here you might hear the calls of cranes or see ravens soaring overhead. In spring and autumn, the bog becomes vibrant in colour and is a perfect place for walks and nature photography. The peace and closeness to nature found here create an experience that stays with visitors for a long time.
Three interesting facts about Tolkuse bog:
- Tolkuse bog formed around 6,000 years ago and lies at the foot of the Rannametsa dunes, the highest dunes in the Baltic States.
- The hiking trail is about 2.2 km long and includes both boardwalk sections and sand dunes, offering a varied and engaging landscape.
- The Tõotusemägi viewing platform stands atop a 36-metre-high sand dune and is one of the best places in Pärnu County to watch the sunset.
