Hüpassaare bog (Viljandi County)

Hüpassaare bog is located on the edge of Soomaa National Park and is known for its untouched nature and profound silence. The hiking trail leads visitors through mysterious pine forests, soft moss fields, and quiet bog pools. At the heart of the bog lies the old forest keeper’s farm of Hüpassaare, where the well-known Estonian composer Mart Saar lived and created much of his music. His birthplace is now a museum that offers a glimpse into life in the bog at the beginning of the 20th century. Hüpassaare is a special place where you can hear nothing but the wind, birdsong, and your own footsteps. In autumn the bog becomes rich with colours and berries, while in summer it offers breathtaking sunsets over the pools. It is an ideal destination for those who want to slow down and truly become one with nature.

Three interesting facts about Hüpassaare bog:

  •  Hüpassaare bog is home to the birthplace of composer Mart Saar, which today functions as a museum.
  • The hiking trail is about 4.4 km long and runs partly along a boardwalk across the bog and through the forest.
  • Hüpassaare bog offers a remarkable experience of silence — something Mart Saar described in his music as “the voice of nature.”
